Tale of Two Finesses

Neither vulnerable, East deals

West leads 5♣️.  North plays 4♣️.  East plays 8♣️.  And declarer (South) wins with Q♣️.

From the play to the first trick it looks like you can count on 11 tricks—three ♣️s, five ♠️s, two ♥️s, and one♦️.  For a twelfth trick you could lead small from the South hand and finesse either Q♦️ or J♥️.  Which finesse should you try ♦️s or ♥️s?

  1. finess in hearts – first – if it doesn’t work you have no choice but to finesse diamonds –

    1. If the heart finesse fails it is too late to try diamonds. Defense will just cash K of diamonds for the setting trick.

  2. You have to start with the diamond finesse.
If you start with the heart finesse, and it fails, you no longer have an option for a diamond finesse. The opponent will cash his diamond King, and you’re down 1.
