First quiz auction:

How should South take North’s 2 NT bid?

Solution to first auction–
North cannot have a strong no-trump hand. He/she would have bid 1 NT on the first round with such a hand. This 2 NT bid is of the “unusual no-trump” variety–showing the two unbid suits (♥️s and ♦️s). South should bid her/his longest red suit.

Second quiz auction:

Now what do you make of partner’s double?

Solution to second auction–
North cannot mean this double as takeout because he/she would have bid 2 NT for takeout (as in the first auction above). North’s reopening double is a penalty double. Most likely East bid a forcing 1 NT and then had to bid 2♠️ with two card support.

The principle here is to avoid having two bids that mean the same thing. South should realize that North bypassed 2 NT for a reason. Your bridge spiritual guide says– The unchosen path reveals intent.
