Card Reading Solution–Hand 1

Here was the original problem:

Solution–
The only ♦️ still out is the Q♦️. If partner started with ♦️ Q 7 she/he would have lead Q♦️ not 7♦️, i.e. top from a doubleton. So partner is out of ♦️s and declarer still has the Q♦️. If you try to cash ♥️ winners there is a very good chance that declarer will ruff, draw trumps, and run the ♦️s. You should lead a ♦️ so that partner can ruff. At trick 2 lead the 9♦️ for partner to ruff. Leading a high ♦️ tells partner to come back in the higher ranking of the remaining non-trump suits, i.e. ♥️s not ♣️s. After partner gets her/his ruff then you can cash ♥️s.

Here was the entire hand:

At our table East tried to cash two ♥️s. Declarer ruffed the second ♥️ and claimed the remaining tricks. Letting North/South make an overtrick gave East/West a 25% board. Only one East out of nine held South to 10 tricks–earning a 60% board for East/West. The key to the hand is to realize that West’s 7♦️ lead is a singleton.
