Card Reading Solution–Hand 3

For this problem you are East. North is a novice player.

Card reading principle: When the defense is running a suit against a novice declarer, the novice will play her/his cards from low to high.

Solution–
Using the principle above we posit that the 7♣️ is declarer’s lowest remaining ♣️. Since we have seen all the ♣️s higher than the 7, we conclude that the 7♣️ is declarer’s last ♣️, i.e. partner has plenty of ♣️s to lead to you. Play a low ♣️ on partner’s 9♣️ and wait for partner to continue ♣️s. You should score five ♣️ tricks to set this 3NT contract.

Here was the entire hand:

At our table East overtook the 9♣️ with the 10♣️ and then cashed the J♣️. At this point West still had the 5♣️ and East had ♣️ 4 3. The ♣️s were blocked. West’s 5♣️ was the fourth and last ♣️ trick for East/West. Declarer eventually finessed the Q♥️ for nine tricks. Letting North make 3NT gave East/West an 8% board. Setting 3NT would have given East/West a 96% board.
