Trick 7–South to Play

At trick seven we have six more winners:
J♠️, A♥️, 10♥️, Q♦️, A♣️, and K♣️. Our candidates for another winner are 7♠️, 9♦️, and a small ♣️. When the 8♦️ was finessed, West won with the ace. That means East has the 10♦️. Given that West overcalled 1♠️, West has at least two ♠️s above the 7♠️ and East has no ♠️s left. Both defenders have ♣️s that can keep our small club from winning.

So what can we do?

Let’s cash some winners!
Win Q♦️ (discarding 4♣️ from the North hand). Then win A♥️. Then cash J♠️ (discarding 4♦️ from the South hand). That brings us to the four card ending below.

Now when North leads the 10♥️, East is squeezed. East must save the 10♦️ to keep South’s 9♦️ from becoming a winner. So East lets go of 3♣️. The 9♦️ has done its job so South discards it on this trick.
And now West is squeezed. West must save the 10♠️ otherwise North will win a trick with the 7♠️. That means that both defenders have come down to two ♣️s each.
Declarer wins K♣️, then A♣️, and the lowly 9♣️ takes the thirteenth trick!
