Passive or Active Defense?

A passive defense means leading suits you believe are safe and not trying to disrupt declarer’s plans. An active defense is one where you take aggressive actions to try to set up tricks for your side, usually by leading away from honors or breaking new suits.  This quiz presents you with the choice—Active Defense or Passive Defense?

North (partner) leads K♣️.  Dummy wins first trick with A♣️.  On trick two Dummy (East) leads a small ♦️ to Declarer’s (West’s) K♦️. Trick three Declarer cashes Q♦️, everyone following small. On trick four Declarer leads the Q♠️ to your A♠️.

You (South) are about to lead to trick five:

If partner has the A♥️, then a small ♥️ lead to the A♥️ will put the defense in the position to win two more ♥️ tricks or Q♣️, ♣️ ruff, and K♥️.  This is the active defense option. The passive defense is to lead a ♦️ or a trump and wait for further developments.

What will it be—attacking lead (♥️) or passive lead? (♦️ / trump)
